Things to Know

Before you climb

Do you already know how to Via Ferrata? Great! Have the required gear you need? Great! If not, consider renting gear from a local outfitter in Vernal. Proper gear is REQUIRED and the via ferrata is monitored for proper use. Uintah County also REQUIRES you sign the liability waiver before you climb. Please click the link to sign. This is also monitored.

How Hard is the via ferrata?

The difficulty is rated using the Fletcher/Smith system, ranging from 1 (easiest) to 5 (most difficult), with an additional letter indicating the alpine commitment. Sections of the AGVF range from 2B to 4C on the Fletcher/Smith system.

If you can handle a 3-5 mile hike through desert terrain and climb ladders, you'll likely do great!

Age requirements and weight limit?

While the Ashley Gorge Via Ferrata is a public course, any children under 90lbs (regardless of age) must be belayed by a professional guide.

As for age, you know your child best and have a good sense of what they’ll feel comfortable with. We recommend the half day course for children under 13 years old and if you choose the full day course, 13+

The Ashley Gorge Via Ferrata rules stipulate that participants must be within the weight range of 90-265lbs (40-120kg). Those outside this range cannot be belayed by recreational parties and require a professional guide (through Dyno Outfitters or other guiding service).

Via Ferrata rules also state that participants must have a minimum reach of 62 inches from the ground in order to safely complete the course.

How difficult is the Via Ferrata?

The difficulty is rated using the Fletcher/Smith system, ranging from 1 (easiest) to 5 (most difficult), with an additional letter indicating the alpine commitment. Sections of the AGVF range from 2B to 4C on the Fletcher/Smith system.

How long does it take to climb?

The half day course takes approximately 4 to 6 hours and the full day course takes 8 to 10 hours. Please plan for enough water and snacks for the length of the course you will be climbing.

Directions to the parking lot?

Please see the Google Map below for directions to the parking lot. One at the parking lot, please follow signs to the trail that leaders to the access of the Via Ferrata.

IS there a bathroom on the course?

There is not a bathroom facility on the course. There is a porta potty at the parking lot, and we highly suggest that you use it before hiking to the via ferrata. Please plan appropriately and bring a "WAG" Bag
